This week I’m joined by Tobi Oredein. Tobi is the co-founder and Editor-in-Chief of Black Ballad which is a subscription lifestyle magazine written by and for black British women. Tobi and her co-founder Bola Awoniyi were named as Forbes 30 Under 30. Tobi is also a freelance journalist, and her work has appeared in BuzzFeed, The Pool and The Debrief to name a few.In today’s episode, Tobi opens up about why Black Ballad became a subscription-based site and how she handled the results of her market research telling her not to. We talk about her reluctance to be an entrepreneur, building a thriving culture that gets people invested and finally all of those wanting to quit and shut it down. What you’ll take away from this episode is how much it takes to run a business and the physical and financial sacrifices you have to make when you don’t have investors. You’ll learn why it’s essential that you do almost all of the jobs in your business to build your humility. Listen Tobi is one of my favourite people. I can’t wait for you to hear more from her on Wednesday where we cover journalism, why she chooses to focus on a niche audience and decision-making.
