Lunch Hour Lectures - Autumn 2014 Dr Steve Fossey, UCL Physics and Astronomy Thermonuclear supernovae signal the sudden and explosive destruction of a white-dwarf star, but rarely occur in our cosmic neighbourhood. However in January 2014 such a supernova appeared in a nearby galaxy, and was discovered in UCL’s teaching observatory. This is the story of that serendipitous discovery and some early results on the nature of these cosmologically significant events.
