Annie Anderson aged 51, has been apprehended in Washington state in connection with a chilling cold case dating back to 2005, wherein a newborn, dubbed "Baby Skylar," was found deceased in a restroom trash can at Arizona's Sky Harbor International Airport. Anderson faces one count of first-degree murder in the tragic incident. The arrest follows a breakthrough in the investigation, with authorities tracing Anderson's involvement through advancements in investigative genetic genealogy. Utilizing publicly available databases, this technique led detectives to Anderson as a possible match for Baby Skylar's mother. The harrowing discovery of Baby Skylar's body on October 10, 2005, shook the community when airport personnel found the infant wrapped in newspapers and a towel inside a plastic bag bearing the label "Marriot." An autopsy revealed the cause of death as suffocation, with indications that the newborn had been alive for approximately 24 hours before her demise. Despite initial dead ends, a collaboration between the cold case homicide unit and the FBI Violent Crime Task Force reignited efforts in 2020, ultimately leading to Anderson's identification as a suspect. Retired detective Troy Hillman highlighted the fortuitous circumstances of Baby Skylar's discovery, noting that the investigation was spurred by a routine search prompted by a lost laptop report. A business traveler at the airport that day reported the loss of their laptop, prompting security and housekeeping to conduct a thorough search of the terminal, including inspecting the trash bins. “They ended up pulling something heavy out of the bag, a black bag. Once they investigated what that was, they found a deceased newborn inside the bag,” retired detective Troy Hillman told the station. “She literally was welcomed into the world only to be murdered. It was just horrific.” After Annie Anderson came back as a possible match, authorities were also able to confirm that at the time the newborn’s body was found, she was in the area for a “real estate boot camp.” After identifying Anderson as likely being Baby Skylar’s mother, investigators traveled to Washington state to interview her in January 2022. During a subsequent news conference, police disclosed that Anderson acknowledged her relationship with Baby Skylar, but they refrained from divulging further details to safeguard the integrity of the impending prosecution. While Anderson awaits extradition to Maricopa County, investigators have clarified that there is no evidence implicating the victim's father in the tragic event.
