Lucy Hunter - Floral Artist, Landscape Designer & Restless Creative

Lucy would describe herself as a visual storyteller who is passionate about creating floral and garden art and capturing that sense of theatre with her camera around the world. Her work has a style that rings true to the British landscape and has a natural untouched quality to it, harking back to the early 20th century, a time when the Bloomsbury group were at their peak, the female form was considered the ultimate in grace and elegance and the British social attitude was quietly reserved. With a Degree in Fine Art from Liverpool University, a lifetime designing gardens and self-taught photography, her work is constantly looking at ways in which we can soften and meld the boundaries between the inside and out. When she is not travelling, Lucy retreats to her own, invariably intertwined garden and studio in the mountains in North Wales. Here she creates, teaches, has a constant, ongoing dialogue with the weeds in the garden and walks with her dogs and camera.Lucy’s episode “a slatted chair fetish” Well, this is an extremely exciting chat with our very own Lucy, where we get a wonderful insight into her innate creativity. Lucy shares some extremely vulnerable thoughts and feelings about her own self-doubt and feelings of ‘not being good enough’, which so may creatives suffer from, despite appearing on the outside, to have absolutely everything. We know it will resonate with so many and makes us feel a little bit better about having those feelings ourselves. Lucy is, of course, well known as ‘Lucy the Flower Hunter’ on Instagram (who doesn’t drool over her instantly recognisable images of achingly beautiful designs in antique urns?). But a less well known fact about Lucy is that she is a very accomplished, well known and sought after landscape designer. Lucy shares her journey with us, from the early days working in a bank, something that’s as far away from what Lucy is about as is possible, to how her yearning to be creative and outside led her to discover gardens. Realising she might be able to earn a living doing something she loved, she retrained and started with a tiny, local garden on a small budget; designed a couple of RHS show gardens (including getting a gold and ‘best in show’) through to the huge and elaborate landscapes she now designs. Even as a child she was always surrounded by beautiful and unusual antique items at home, making absolute sense of her trademark images, but most excitingly of all … … we finally get to reveal that Lucy has written a book, ‘The Flower Hunter’. This isn’t just any book though, it’s a beautiful coffee-table style book that Lucy has not only written, but, naturally, has taken all the photographs for as well. You just KNOW it is going to be absolutely stunning - you’ll have to listen or watch for the full details ;) See Lucy’s website for full details of pre-ordering, including the option of getting a signed copy.
