Fiona Pickles - Floral Artist & Restless Creative

Heavily influenced by nature, the seasons, wonky stems and negative space, her work gradually became more grounded, artful and unusual and Fiona eventually started to work under her own name at the end of 2020. She teaches her art both from her Yorkshire cutting garden and at some of the most prestigious flower schools around the world. Fiona’s work is instantly recognisable for its wild untamed beauty, its natural, grounded design and for looking like it’s been pulled straight out of a painting. She specialises in dramatic floral installations, both hanging and freestanding and is a passionate advocate of natural, sustainable floristry. She was an early adopter of foam-free installations. ‘I adore using the unusual. I see beauty in the most unexpected things and it’s usually these that fire off inspiration, often more so than a perfect flower. Rusty, twisted metal; gnarled bark or dried out contorted blooms just speak to me somehow. The movement, texture and patina all work together to create a wonderful narrative.’ Of course, Fiona also co-hosts The Restless Creatives Podcast along with us, Brigitte and Lucy. Well, we really don’t know where to start with the unexpected things we discovered about Fiona, from choosing a subject that she hated at school to study at college (admittedly only momentarily); heading off to London like Dick Whittington and even ‘Fiona Pickles, the movie’. We learn about where she developed her eye for colour; her original ‘loved and lost’ garden and there are some amazing revelations that we couldn’t quite believe. Let’s just say we now see her in a totally different light …!
