This week The PMO Podcast™ Featured Story introduces, “Business Driven PMO Setup; Chapter 12 - Organizational Project Management: From Theory to Practice” presented by Mark Perry (about Mark), host of The PMO Podcast™. Each chapter of the book starts off with a cartoon and the cartoon in Chapter 12 goes like this. There is a picture of three project managers having a chat. One project manager says, “He who commits a mistake and does not correct it has just committed another. Confucius said that.” The second project manager adds, “Confucius must have been a PMP.” And the third project manager finishes with, “No, he was a certified OPM3 assessor.” For many enthusiasts of project management maturity, the cartoon as shown in figure 12.1 of the book hits close to home. Maturity, in any discipline, has at its roots a passion for getting things right and arguably, the Organizational Project Management Maturity Model referred to as OPM3® is the leading standard and crème de la crème of maturity models for Organizational Project Management, bar none. Theoretically, the benefits of OPM3® are that it enables an organization to understand its current level of maturity, identify areas for improvement, and implement improvements that enable the organization to advance its strategies through the successful management of projects. However, before making a commitment to go forward with an OPM3® initiative and in order to realize the promise of OPM3® and reap practical value from its theoretical construct, there are a few caveats to consider. The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo suggests, “Stop Unproductive Networking." How many networking groups do you belong to? Are you caught up in the whirlwind of online sites and groups that offer the promise of some kind of networking potential? Are you a member of all of the various professional groups that have something related to your profession? And, what are you getting out of it? Absolutely seek to build your network. And use modern techniques. But don’t forget that it is all about individual people, not gadgets or groups. Relationships with real people; that is where you will find real value. The PMO Podcast™ Mailbag answers a listener question about setting up a person PMO.
