This week The PMO Podcast™ Featured Story introduces, “Business Driven PMO Setup; Chapter 11 - Line of Business PMOs: The Ubiquitous Nature of Project Management” presented by Mark Perry (about Mark), host of The PMO Podcast™. Each chapter of the book starts off with a cartoon and the cartoon in Chapter 11 goes like this. There is a picture of a Sales VP talking to the PMO manager and one of the project managers in the PMO. The sales VP says, “Do you have anything in your PMO that we in sales and marketing can use to help us better manage all of our department projects?” The PMO manager replies, “You mean those informal projects?” The sales VP agitatedly replies back, “Yeah, those informal projects we do to sell our informal customers, to make our informal quotas, to meet the informal expectations of our informal bosses.” You get the picture. Informal projects, right. Far too often, many PMOs and those in the project management community take an inward view of project management. They view project management as a professional practice limited to those that have been formally trained and work in a formal project management organization. The cartoon as shown in figure 11.1 of the book sheds light on a common PMO oversight, the ubiquitous nature of project management. It is everywhere. And, to assume that projects outside of the parameters of the strategic project office or formal PMO are simply informal and unimportant endeavors would be a gross oversight and misunderstanding of the value to the organization of such efforts. The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo introduces a new website for “Project Management Lectures." Have you seen this new website for PM lectures?
