This week The PMO Podcast™ Featured Story presents, "An Introduction to the Project Management Triple Constraints," presented by Mark Perry (about Mark), host of The PMO Podcast™. Like any business endeavor, projects need to be performed and delivered under constraints. Traditionally, the project management triple constraints have been listed as scope, time, and cost. These three triple constraints are often depicted in a triangle, the Project Management Triangle, where each side represents a constraint. By finding out from the sponsor which constraint is most important and why, the project manager can best deal with the issues and changes that the project will face. The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo discusses, “Confucius and Project Management." According to Confucius, "By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is the noblest; Second, by imitation, which is the easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest." In setting up a PMO, there are ample opportunities for all three methods of learning wisdom. Adopting de facto standard processes "as-is" is a useful way to rapidly benefit from the wisdom of others. Examining defined processes, benchmark measurements, and qualitative data provides further insight and wisdom as well as opportunities for process improvement within the PMO. And, experience is always an excellent teacher and it doesn't always have to be bitter. The PMO Podcast™ Mailbag answers a listener question about how to effectively use and apply lessons learned.
