Before becoming a full-time writer, he was an officer in the United States Air Force during World War II and a diplomat in the United States Foreign Service.He is perhaps best known for the character James Retief, a cynical spacefaring diplomat, who is based or at the very least inspired in part on Laumer’s service as a diplomat.
