12. Birth Experienced Spiritually Vs. Medically w/ @itsaconfettiparty

Shira is a social media creative and Mo is at the cusp of finishing his 10 year journey to becoming a neonatologist. They retell the birth stories of their 3 children, highlighting the stark differences between having their first 2 babies 10 years ago as newlyweds and their 3rd baby who was born a few months ago. Shira faced quite a few obstacles during her first birth, including an unexpected acute medical condition and her baby showing signs of distress during labor. The couple gives their individual perspectives of this birth, which are quite different. Shira accessed her connection with G-d to get through this difficult time while Mo's medical training gave him a different view. Mo talks about how working with critically sick newborns influenced the way he experienced their latest pregnancy and Shira talks about how being married to a doctor with an intensely busy schedule created the need for more control over her birth. They also talk about the perks of having a neonatologist for a father of a newborn.   Shira's expression of creativity and spirituality takes on many forms. Her trademark rainbow challahs, iconic Jewish pop art and stunning video creations can be found on her Instagram account @itsaconfettiparty. She most recently began selling her original, Jewish inspired, neon hued pop art paintings on her new Instagram page, @theshirashencollection.    To continue the conversation, and learn more about similar topics, check out the Yoledet Academy Instagram community.   Promo codes for this episode’s sponsors:   7th Day Shine - natural, chemical and paraben free makeup specially formulated for permissible application on Shabbos. Unpopular opinion: A healthy mom and healthy baby are NOT enough. Why don't we pay attention to a mother's experience and perceptions of her birth enough? I'm an L&D nurse revealing insider secrets that you won't learn in your standard childbirth ed class. We explore every facet (from opposite extremes) of not just birth, but the experience of womanhood and childbearing. Along with women sharing their experiences vulnerably, a slew of experts gift us with knowledge we never thought we needed. I throw in an extra layer to the discussion by exploring the implications of Judaism and Jewish culture on the reproductive experience. This show spans way beyond pregnancy and birth, with topics on sex, birth control, birth trauma, perinatal mental health, postpartum realities, breastfeeding, sleep training, diet culture, infertility, realities of our healthcare system, Jewish law, and so much more.
