Using your mindset to grow and succeed in life. Joining me on the show today is Ryan Gottfredson. Ryan is a cutting edge leadership development consultant, author, trainer and professor at the Mihaylo College of Business and Economics. He’s also the author of the bestselling self-help book, Success Mindset - The key to unlocking success in your life, work and leadership. Ryan’s Journey. Ryan wasn’t always positive and success-driven like he currently is. He’s had to struggle through various life obstacles to be the mindset junkie he is today. Like so many people, Ryan thought that the way he saw the world was the best way to see it. To improve himself and his life trajectory, Ryan decided to pursue a PhD in Organizational Behaviour and Human Resource at Indiana University and specialized in leadership. In his studies. Ryan noticed that the primary focus of developing people and leaders is behaviour. As amazing as this discovery was, he deemed it short-sighted. Because to him, there are people who do the right things, but for the wrong reasons. Thus, what really matters is what underlies the behaviour we do, and not the behaviour itself. And for Ryan, this underlying factor was mindset. The Success Mindset. Ryan identified that there’s a common set of mindset frameworks that are applied across the disciplines of Psychology, Education management, and Marketing. He’s compiled these mindsets into one framework which he uses to help individuals awaken their mindset based on their unique character and behaviour. Mindset has 3 specific jobs in our lives. Filter in the select information from our new experiences and situations. Interpret this new information in unique ways Activate our different elements e.g personality, skills, values, goals etc to best meet the demands of the current situation we’re in. And so, it’s because of their mindset that two different people can experience a similar situation, but respond differently to it. People with a growth mindset will see obstacles as an opportunity to learn and grow, whilst individuals with a fixed mindset see similar situations as failures and try to avoid them in any way possible. How Ryan helps people. In his workshop seminars, Ryan helps individuals improve their ability to look at something they would otherwise look through. The reason people look through situations is that they think their mindset is the best way to look at things. By helping such individuals step outside themselves and look through different mindsets, Ryan helps them deepen their awareness, and improve their mindfulness and emotional intelligence. This further builds the individuals into being more agile, which improves their ability to navigate challenging and complex situations. Quotes. Leadership and entrepreneurial effectiveness are more than just doing certain things. It's about being a certain type of person. Our mindsets are truly the most foundational part of what we do. How we see the world depends on our mindsets, therefore, affecting our thoughts and behaviours. If we can improve our mindsets, then we can naturally improve our lives. When people have a prevention mindset, they focus on preventing losses. They just want to avoid problems. On the other hand, people who are focused on winning aren’t concerned with problems, only progress. When a crisis happens, we get into survival mode, and what this does is shift our mindset to a negative one. We start focusing on ourselves and lose sight of how we can positively impact everyone else around us.
