Illegal Abortion Led to Lifetime of Activism

In 1966, Renee Chelian had an illegal abortion that almost killed her. That experience, when she was just 15 years old, inspired a lifetime of work as an abortion clinic owner in Metro Detroit. Michigan Radio’s Sarah Cwiek and Nancy Kaffer, editorial columnist at the Detroit Free Press, talked to us about Chelian's life and the uncertain future she and other abortion care providers face in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Dobbs v.
