Rev. Dr. Terrlyn L. Curry Avery wasn’t always a pastor, she first became a psychologist. Her goal in life has always been to help people heal and she did that for years as a psychologist working with disenfranchised youth in schools, reform centers, and psychological hospitals. Even though Terrlyn had a successful career as a psychologist she felt called by God to become a pastor.  After studying divinity and becoming a pastor she wanted to find a way to merge her gifts as a psychologist and a spiritual leader which is why she coined the term pastology. Pastology is her way of focusing on the synergy between the fields of pastoring and psychology and she now helps people heal and become the best they can be in all levels of their lives: mentally, spiritually, emotionally. How Rev. Dr. Curry began her work helping to dismantle racism As a woman of color, Terrlyn Curry has had to deal with systematic racism since birth. She noticed how it affected her family growing up and also observed the disparity between the treatment of white children and children of color in schools and hospital settings in her work as a psychologist.  Terrlyn realized that as a pastor and psychologist that she was in a position to do something to help dismantle racism which is why she decided to write her book and offer coaching courses. Rev. Dr. Curry provides coaching support for thought leaders to help them understand how their sphere of influence can change the status quo.  In her programs, Terrlyn offers participants an opportunity to engage in structured, thought-provoking, action-oriented dialogue. Her programs are designed to increase awareness of racial inequities and to deepen the level of consciousness and commitment of participants around issues of systemic and institutional racism. These discussions are further designed to begin the individual transformation and further systemic transformation within organizations, communities, and institutions. What can you do to help dismantle racism? If you are a transformational leader you don’t get to opt out of the conversation on race because it is at the forefront of all of our minds. If you want to make a bigger impact on the world, then you have to position your business to be more inclusive. You may be unintentionally leaving out people of color without even being aware of it.  To understand what you need to do to become more inclusive you first have to understand what drives you. First, you must transform yourself. You’ll need to ask yourself difficult questions. As you work your way through these questions you may feel discomfort but without discomfort, you cannot experience growth.  Discover what questions you need to be asking yourself so that you can step up and take action.
