Episode 74. How Insights From Science Can Boost Your Creativity, Innovation & Career – Dr Jayshree Seth

How can insights from a successful career in science and engineering boost your creativity, innovation and career? I discussed this and so much more with Dr Jayshree Seth, Corporate Scientist and Chief Science Advocate at 3M, on Episode 74 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast. In this episode, we will learn about: Not worrying about where your career starts and focusing on the journey, Developing creativity and incorporating innovation into your work, How learning from failure and being resilient can help your career The importance of good communication with your stakeholders and managing their expectations, The mosaic building framework, Becoming comfortable with change and uncertainty, Insights to stand out in a job interview, Strategies to develop your leadership skills and Not underestimating the impact of luck (good and bad) in your career. Jayshree is a Corporate Scientist at 3M and currently holds 80 patents for a variety of innovations, with several additional pending. She joined 3M in 1993 after an MS and PhD in Chemical Engineering from Clarkson University, New York.  Jayshree was appointed 3M’s first ever Chief Science Advocate in 2018 and is using her scientific knowledge, technical expertise and professional experience to advance science and communicate the benefits of science and the importance of diversity in STEM fields to drive innovation.  She is the author of the books, The Heart of Science – Engineering Footprints, Fingerprints, & Imprints, and The Heart of Science – Engineering Fine Print published by the Society of Women Engineers, and all sales proceeds go to a scholarship for underrepresented minority women in STEM. She is a sought-after speaker, globally, on a multitude of topics such as innovation, leadership and STEM advocacy and has featured in local, national and international media. Jayshree and I talked about learning from failure and she told me: "People are not that comfortable with not knowing and if it doesn't work the way they wished for it to work, it's a failure. Emulating this scientific approach, can benefit career development because you can just adopt a mindset of continuous experimentation and learning … See, we can only learn if we act. And if we act, we can fail. Of course, if you don't act, you can fail too, because you just failed to innovate … embracing failure is part of the learning journey. You build resilience, adaptability, willingness to take risk."   People & Resources Mentioned Jayshree's TEDx talk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00OXFWU28tA Jayshree’s song: https://www.playitforward.com/projects/344 Range - David Epstein Good To Great – Jim Collins   Contact Jayshree LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jayshree-seth-6287b45/   Reframe & Reset Your Career Resources & Contact Info Website: https://www.harshaboralessa.com/  YouTube Channel:  https://www.youtube.com/c/ReframeResetYourCareer  LinkedIn Page: https://www.linkedin.com/company/reframe-reset-your-career/?viewAsMember=true E-mail - [email protected] Thank you for your continued support of Reframe & Reset Your Career, I do appreciate it.
