Music for Easteride - Episode 1 In ‘Music for Eastertide’ Matthew Ward introduces songs and instrumental works from over a thousand years of music celebrating the most important date in the Church’s year. From dramatic re-imaginings of the Easter events to music for the liturgies of the season, this series will explore music both well-loved and unfamiliar. In the Easter Octave the programmes will focus on the first events of Easter: Jesus’ resurrection and his first apparitions. After this, programmes will focus on various aspects of Eastertide, including a programme on settings of the word ‘Alleluia’ and one on Easter Marian music, culminating in programmes of music for Ascension and Pentecost. Join Matthew in a journey of musical exploration which will not fail to lift your spirits and deepen your experience of Easter joy this year. Episode 1 - Music attempting to imagine the events of the Resurrection, from the trembling earth to Mary Magdalene’s encounter with the angels and then with Jesus. Music includes J.S. Bach’s Easter Oratorio, ‘Terra tremuit’ by Daniel Roth, Cozzolani’s ‘Ave mater dilectissima’, Sofia Gubaidulina’s ‘St John Easter’, the motet “Congratulamini mihi” from Thomas Crecquillon and Vaughan-Williams, “I got me flowers”.
