How to be the CEO of your own destiny with Emmylou MacCarthy

In this episode of the Powerful Stories Podcast, Tory Archbold interviews businesswoman, mother of 3 and wife Emmylou. Showing up and being Y-O-U takes guts. ‘We all have body confidence issues. Whether you are a size 8 with abs or a Mum with C-section scars – it’s all powerful because people can relate to it. I am not building a brand on anything else other than who I am’ says Emmylou. ‘I remember sitting on the couch with my sister and saying in two years I will be at the Logies – either as a media presenter or a server.’ She was determined that nothing would stand in her way – including herself.    Emmylou’s tribe and community have s been part of her journey from the very beginning. ‘I started out by sharing my day-to-day on Instagram stories, which has evolved into an active group of women who are along for the ride’ she says. For Emmylou her passion and love in the kitchen started young. ‘I moved out of home when I was 14 years old and I offered to cook so I could have cheap rent.’ That is where it all started and now she is a cook-book author, producer and collaborator.    So, the three most powerful steps we can take today to rise up and be the CEO of our own destiny. ‘Don’t’ wait to become confident’ says Emmylou, ‘Courage is what has gotten me here today – not confidence.’ Her courage has led her to become confident. And, ‘put your blinkers on and keep moving forward’ says Emmylou.    Emmylou’s biggest learning has been that mistakes are part of growth. We can’t be afraid of failure. ‘We cannot learn if we do not make mistakes, and one of the most powerful things we can do is own our mistakes and move forward.’ One of her recent mistakes was prioritising her career over family, and she openly discusses the impact and how she took steps to re-focus on what matters in life. ‘Understand that leading with respect is the best way to communicate. And, do not fear what your relationship looks like to the outside world – you are allowed to have a unique relationship with your family.’ Do what works for you and stay in your lane’ she says and ‘if you are not communicating well then own it, take a breath and ask yourself -how you can I do this better.’   So, sit back and enjoy this powerful story with the extraordinary Emmylou MacCarthy.    Links:   Sign up to the Powerful Steps #coffeechallenge to gain Tory’s proven formula for building a global network, with three coffee dates a week.
