July 19, 2021 – National Get Out Of The Doghouse Day | National Daiquiri Day

Welcome to July 19th, 2021 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate making peace and cooling off.  In 1077 CE, Emperor Henry IV got into a huge argument with Pope Gregory VII and was excommunicated from the Catholic Church. As leader of the Holy Roman Empire, this wasn’t acceptable for Henry and he needed to make things right. So he went to the Pope to make peace. After traveling across the Alps, Henry waited outside the Pope’s residence for three days. In the snow. With no shoes. Eventually, Pope Gregory felt the Emperor had had enough and welcomed him inside to accept his apology. On National Get Out Of The Doghouse Day, it’s time to eat some crow and make nice with the people in our lives we may have crossed. Hopefully they accept your apology faster than Pope Gregory did. Some drinks are synonymous with tropical vacations, but the daiquiri is named after a small mining town in Santiago de Cuba.  During the Spanish American War, workers at a mine in Daiquiri would gather to cool off at the end of a long day’s work.  At a place called the Venus bar their American supervisor, Jennings Cox came up with the drink made from rum, lime juice, and sugar.  But when Ernest Hemmingway first encountered the daiquiri, he ordered another without the sugar and double the rum. This drink became known as the Papa Doble. Hemingway bragged that he could drink 17 daiquiris without getting a hangover.
