This is the 4th episode in a 4-part series discussing WWII in Alaska. On May 11, 1943, American troops executed a massive invasion of Attu Island, where thousands of Japanese troops awaited them. The result was a long grueling battle which lead to a large loss of lives, the second deadliest proportionally only to Iwo Jima out of all American battles fought in the Pacific during WWII.
