111: How Much Prestige Matters

We explore prestige and how the pursuit of prestigious positions or companies impacts us in different ways, from the stories we tell to the positions we take. It’s understandable that we use prestige to catch eyes when a notable name might buy us a few more seconds in front of a potential employer. We’re naturally going to consider what working in a particular position or at a particular company means as we decide which recruiter calls to return and where to put our energy. And that’s what we’re diving into on today’s podcast. How we tend to use prestige as conversational shorthand and whether the “brand name”, be it the company or the title, is enough. We close today’s episode with some helpful action steps to examine our relationship with prestige and recognize the power of knowing our story and deciding how we will share it.   To learn more about the ideas and resources discussed in this episode, us and our work, and to join our mailing list, visit the show notes. Om Podcasten

We’re Nayla Bahri and Eric Johnson, and we love to talk about the intersection of life and work. Why? Most of us will spend more hours of our life working than doing anything else. The relationship we have with work, and the way we make meaning of our time and experience there, serves as a great platform to explore how we show up to the rest of our lives: relationships, family and parenting, our health, our hobbies and interests, and our general attitude towards the human experience. With insights and observations pulled from our leadership and career coaching, teaching and consulting work, as well as the most relevant research across fields, we’ll talk about the ideas that really impact how you experience work – and your life – and actionable strategies to make work work for you, from the inside out.
