On December 15, 1900, the Eilean Mor lighthouse went dark. When a ship arrived eleven days later to check on the lighthouse keepers, the place was found to be deserted. The beds were neatly made, the kitchen was clean and tidy, and the lighthouse lamp atop the tower was filled with oil. The island was thoroughly searched, but not a trace of the men was ever found.
