As climate change progresses, the threat of severe weather events like hurricanes and typhoons increases drastically. Such occurrences are not only extremely dangerous in the moment but can also cut off entire cities from global food supply chains. As many towns run out of fresh food in only a matter of days – which is often not enough time to rebuild severely damaged infrastructure like roads and railways tracks – relying on trains and trucks to bring in food can make the situation even more dangerous. This stresses how crucial local and short food supply chains are to be able to cater to a population in times of need. And this is exactly the reason why the Floating Farm in Rotterdam was established. In this episode, Janine talks to Peter van Wingerden, founder of the Floating Farm, about how we need to find solutions to better adapt to climate changes and how building farms on water can be one of these solutions.
