National insurance hike comes into effect despite cost of living crisis

Best of Today - Ein Podcast von BBC Radio 4

The government’s proposal to increase national insurance contributions comes into effect today despite the hike breaking a manifesto commitment. Employees, businesses and the self-employed will pay an extra 1.25p in the pound and it is earmarked for government spending on social care. After the announcement last year, the plans were met with criticism over the timings as many people face sharp rises in energy bills and prices in general. Today’s Justin Webb spoke to Sally Warren who is director of policy at The King's Fund, a think tank focusing on health and social care. Also on the programme was Mike Padgham, chair of the Independent Care Group and the Health and Social Care Secretary, Sajid Javid. (Image Credit: Getty Images)
